Welcome.
Welcome to
the Caerphilly
Tech Association
Web site. We are an organization whose primary task is
renewing friendships and forming a link for those who
attended the Caerphilly Boys Technical School between the
years 1930 until 1953. Hopefully, those who attended the
school and were unaware of this association will now make
contact. For our existing members in various parts of the
world please use the facilities within this site for any
communication.

A little local
history.
The
Caerphilly Boys Technical School was built in
1928
on the side of Caerphilly mountain and shared a commanding
view with an adjacent Caerphilly Boys Secondary
School (later becoming the Caerphilly Boys Grammar
School in 1948)
both schools overlooking the town of Caerphilly including
the Rhymney and Aber valleys. In
1953
the Caerphilly Boys Technical School lost its
independent status and merged with the adjacent
Caerphilly Boys Grammar School and the two schools
became known as the Caerphilly Boys Grammar Technical
School. As a result of and in line with new educational
policies the school later became co-educational and renamed
the St. Martins Comprehensive School in
1973.
Another school worthy of mention and within the same time
span also becoming affected by the same educational policies
was the Caerphilly Girls Grammar School, built in
1912
as a co-educational higher elementary school and in
1929
became the Girls Elementary School (later becoming
the Caerphilly Girls Grammar School in
1948)
known today as Ysgol Gymraeg Y Castell (The Castle
Welsh School).

Caerphilly
Tech Association - How it all
started.
In 1986
Mervyn Jones, whilst clearing and sorting some of his
documents, discovered a mislaid photograph which had been
taken many years earlier. It was an old school photograph of
his form back in 1935 and brought back nostalgic memories of
his experience as a pupil of the Caerphilly Boys Technical
School. His curiosity led him into making attempts at
contacting former pupils of the school and after several
months of perseverance succeeded in contacting four others
Joe Bracchi, Leonard Davies, Leonard Starr and Harry Tarr
who responded positively and with an equal enthusiasm. They
agreed on having an evening out and arranged dinner in a
local hotel, thus started the first of a now well
established twice annual dinners. Using common sense, subtle
maneuvering together with having a dinner as bait they
encouraged their wives to participate and that became the
accepted arrangement and still is. The foundations were laid
and this small group increased in number and established
what is known today as the Caerphilly Tech Association.

Founder.
Mervyn, our
Founder member, sadly died in 1998 at the age of 76. We owe
him our gratitude in having the foresight and pursuing his
initial goal which became reality and thankfully he
experienced the results of his efforts before he past away.
Preceding his retirement Mervyn lectured in Mechanical
Engineering.
